Harold Pinter is one of Britain’s greatest playwrights, and we want to show you some of his black humour.
Is it possible to communicate, and if so, do we mean the same thing by words or are we moving in separate universes? Is communication impossible?
Does each character have an identity and, if so, with whom and what do they identify?
In most scenes we see stories of strong women and unfortunate men.
Hidden in every scene are questions of power.
Fear distorts the human soul, power distorts character, and it is often difficult to see through the lies of communication. It is easy to judge just because someone is different. In Pinter’s scenes we manage to laugh at ourselves.
Slight ache – Garden, flowers, idyll and a couple who understand each other. Or do they? What is that strange man doing at the garden gate?
A night out – Mum and her „tiny” son. A grown-up boy who wants to be a man, but the mother won’t let him. What happens when this boy gets out of such an environment and tries to meet a girl?
In Trouble in the works, the conversation between a clueless boss and a burnt-out, overworked worker makes us chuckle bitterly.
Black and White is a dialogue between two homeless women about the impossibility of connection.
Request Stop is the slanderous communication of a neurotic, prejudiced lady at a bus stop.
Last to go is a postmodern conversation that makes it clear that we have nothing to say to the other person, we don’t listen to each other, we emphatically don’t care about the other person’s fate.
